Strategizing for E-Learning Success with Learning Management Systems

E-learning courses distributed via learning management systems help to solve many problems that schools have faced in recent months, including fewer course offerings, lack of funding, and lack of AP courses.

But the other side of the coin is the increased danger of student dishonesty in their work–not only involving plagiarism, but also being “inspired” by existing information and other subtle forms of cheating.

Those of us in the e-learning community who believe that online education can be an effective way to teach and train students are also concerned by what we see happening in a widespread way. All too often, online education systems are not well developed. And the students are the ones who suffer. It becomes difficult to know whether or not a student understands the material based on the online assignments and assessments.

Studies indicate that around 70% of American high school seniors admit to cheating at least once in their high school career, and 95% of those students say they were never caught in the act. In other words, most people cheat at some point.

As online course developers, training instructors, and educators, it’s our goal to provide students with engaging and effective learning material in order to make sure they are both excited about and held responsible for their own learning experience. But how do we secure this objective?

A powerful learning management system will include the best features for ensuring that learners are giving their best effort and creative work. Part of these are tools that prevent cheating and monitor student activities within a course.

Particularly at the university level, employing Web 2.0 tools such as discussion forums for assignments is common. But educators need to realize that it isn’t enough to set up the system and hope it will run itself. Without clear organization and a strategy for making the most of a Web 2.0 tool in the virtual classroom, repetition, plagiarism, and lack of effort on learners’ parts is unavoidable.

To ensure that students are engaged with the material, the best strategy is to create interesting learning content in the first place. E-learning tools like videos, simulations, and podcasts are often simple and effective ways of obtaining and maintaining student interest.

But even the most interesting course needs to be kept in check by a system of tracking and monitoring of student progress.

Taking advantage of learning management system tools such as automated tracking is an essential part of the training and teaching process, in order to ensure successful e-learning.
