Getting Started With Homeschooling
So you have decided to start homeschooling. Congratulations on your new venture! Homeschooling your children is very rewarding, but can also be challenging. It can certainly be overwhelming knowing where to start. Don’t despair, here are a few good things to help you in getting started with homeschooling.
First and foremost, educate yourself on your state’s homeschooling laws. Each state has a different set of laws pertaining to homeschooling and you have to know them. Whether or not you know the laws, you will be held accountable. You might want to join a homeschooling group. While you will usually have to pay an annual fee for membership, this is well worth the cost if you will need their assistance. One of the most popular of these groups is the Home School Legal Defense Fund.
You’ll also want to get a good curriculum guide. There are quite a few different choices available for this. Comprehensive guides covering many possible curricula will make it easier to find one which is suited to your children’s needs. While we’re on the subject of curricula, you should make a budget for your homeschooling expenses. You can spend as much or as little as you like since there are so many resources out there. You shouldn’t be afraid to adjust your curriculum as needed. That is the idea of homeschooling – having the flexibility to tailor the curriculum to your child.
Joining a support group may also be a good idea. It can get overwhelming having to take care of every aspect of your child’s education. The input of other parents who have chosen to homeschool can be very helpful. Look around to see if there are any such groups in your area. If not, why not start your own? You may be surprised how many people in your own neighborhood homeschool their children. You could also opt for an online support group; there are many to choose from and this way, you can find help any time of day or night.
Remember to do your search. There is an abundance of useful guides on homeschooling out there- your local library probably has many of these available. You can also ask other homeschooling parents about which books they found to be useful when they were getting started. Homeschoolers are happy to help a newcomer and will be eager to share their insights. The web is another good source – you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much is out there.
Homeschooling can be a great way for you to nurture your child’s love of learning and can be a great and enjoyable experience for you both. Good luck with your homeschooling – don’t forget to study the issues before you begin.
